Yesterday I talked to my dad for a while to wish him a happy Father's Day. He asked me if I was still gaining weight and the last time I weighed myself (5 days earlier) I weighed 136. After talking to my dad I decided maybe I should weigh in again. Bad idea...142!!! "What! It's only been 5 days! I'm supposed to be gaining 1-2 pounds per week! At this rate I'm going to be huge!"
So at first gaining weight was kind of fun for me. It was more of a novelty because I've never really seen my weight fluctuate before. I've been between 100-115 pounds probably since I was 16 - with a stomach virus always reducing me back to 100.
But now seeing the scales register in so high and knowing I still have 10 more weeks to go makes me really nervous. Part of me is hoping my baby is actually the cause of the sudden weight gain and I really just have a porker of a baby inside me...but everything I've read has said the baby probably only weighs about 3-3.5 pounds right now...there goes that idea. I guess I'm going to have to stop eating all the leftover cupcakes...well, there's only 1 left, no reason to quit now. :)
And I know gaining weight is desirable while pregnant but it's also crazy! A healthy BMI before pregnancy means you should gain 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. I was just barely below that before I was pregnant, so technically I'm in the underweight category and should gain 28-40 pounds. So far I've only gained 27...but either way, that is a normal amount of weight to gain during a pregnancy...and if I only gain 1 pound per week for the next 10 weeks I'm going to be ending at the top of the recommended weight gain charts.
It's especially crazy to me because I didn't really start gaining weight until I was about 20 weeks because I lost so much weight while I was sick that it wasn't until 20 weeks that I was back to my starting weight of 115. So technically I've gained 27 pounds in just under 9 weeks, roughly equivalent to 3 pounds per week. I better not have 30 more pounds to go!
And of course, because I'm also a hypochondriac, and I have access to Google, I start scaring myself even more by reading about sudden rapid weight gain (more than 1-2 pounds in a week) and what that could mean. The first thing I saw was an article about preeclampsia. Which of course then I read all the symptoms and start telling myself, "oh no, I'm dying." (not that preeclampsia would generally cause death, but I am also over-dramatic). It's a good job I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday so he can confirm I just need to lay off the cupcakes if I'm so worried about my weight.
On a side note, my fingers are getting a little swollen and I woke up last night to my ring finger being all tingly and I couldn't get my ring off. I washed my hands with lots of soap this morning and managed to yank it off, so I think it's going to have to stay off for the rest of my pregnancy :( I'm sad.
