For starters, we went to Lake Tahoe for about a week and had so much fun! Aiden loved all the attention from his uncles and Grandma and Grandpa Folkman. We all stayed in a house and Aiden loved showing off his crawling and discovery skills. He was like a little explorer finding every dust bunny, bug, and electrical cord in the house. (That's not to say that the house was unusually dirty, just that it is Lake Tahoe and Aiden is exceptionally good at finding everything I don't want him to have!) At the lake Aiden was quite happy playing in his kiddy pool or being showered with attention from Grandpa. I was really worried that Aiden would want to eat the sand or take off and crawl into the lake, but he really seemed content to stay in a confined area and play. He's such a fun-loving little guy.
It was so hot at the lake! Unfortunately because it was so hot Aiden didn't get to wear some of his cute outfits. So, I had to take some pictures of him wearing them when we got back.
Around this same time, Aiden decided he will not eat anything unless he can feed it to himself. That really makes mealtimes difficult, especially because he doesn't seem to care to use a spoon. The food goes from his fists to his hair, the floor, and all over Mommy. It's definitely the most frustrating time, but I try to remind myself that soon enough he'll be eating whatever he wants and I won't have to be constantly covered in mush, and this whole experience will be something I'll look back at with fondness. But for now meals are a struggle and I can't wait until he's better at eating real food.
Most importantly, I missed posting about Aiden's first birthday! He was lucky enough to have his Grandma Folkman come out to celebrate with us! He is definitely one loved little boy. The morning of his birthday, Tyler and I went into his room and sang "Happy Birthday" to him. He seemed a little startled by all the fanfare so early in the morning. Once he had his bottle, we brought him out into the living room where all of his presents were waiting for him. He started opening the presents and seemed to have a good time playing with the paper and boxes. But, he didn't really seem to care too much what was inside. That is, until we blew up his ball pit. He immediately dove right in and started playing with the balls. This kid loves balls.
It was incredible to me that he knew just what that inflatable contraption was for and had a great time playing in it. Sadly, we hadn't finished opening up his presents and he was definitely more interested in playing with the balls than his last couple of presents.
After all the gifts were opened and played with, we hit the road for San Diego. We picked up Tyler's cousin and checked out the San Diego Zoo. We all had a great time seeing all the animals and finding Grandma Folkman's favorite monkey. Aiden still seems a little too young to appreciate all the animals but seemed to enjoy people-watching from his stroller. He also loved being carried around by his Daddy while being chased by Grandma. All-in-all I think Aiden had a great 1st birthday and I'm already overwhelmed wondering how we'll ever top it.
On Saturday we threw Aiden a little birthday party in the park with some of our neighbors and friends. We had hotdogs (JDawgs), fruit, chips, and cupcakes. Tyler helped Aiden blow out his candle and then we let him eat a cupcake. He didn't seem too interested in it though. He ate one little chunk of the cake but didn't seem to want the frosting and was done after that one bite.
Since his birthday, Aiden has become an expert walker. He's been learning to walk for about 2 months or so, but he has really started getting good over the past week. And he is getting fast! Sometimes I don't even realize he's near me until he's just about bowling me over. And he's into everything! He's such a little monkey. I can't even believe what all he can reach when he wants to.
We've had our neighbor friends over to play with Aiden's birthday presents (he's a good sharer) and he's seemed to enjoy watching the other kids play. He doesn't usually want to interact with them but he usually seems content to sit and watch or simply walk into the dining room and play on his own. But, he did show the girls how to properly use a ball pit. The two girls (1.5 and 2.5) would both take balls out of the pit and gleefully run them back to their moms to show them what they found. Aiden apparently was not impressed and climbed into the pit to show them what a good time they could be having. But, when one of the girls (1.5) decided she wanted to join him in the pit, he decided it was time to duck out fast. I've never seen him crawl out of there so fast!
Our neighbor across the hall has a little boy who is 6 weeks younger than Aiden and about 10 lbs heavier. He loves walking down the hall and knocking on our door. Once I opened the door not looking to see who it was and in he crawled--immediately heading for Aiden's toy box. It was really funny. It's also fun to watch Aiden interact with him. They're at about the same stages developmentally, but he's a bit better at walking than Aiden is. I think Aiden has him on speed though. Sometimes the neighbor boy likes to try to get too close for Aiden's comfort and he just takes off. I think he's scared of getting squashed.
My little baby is definitely more of a toddler now than a baby. It's kind of sad, but he's so much fun and so happy all the time. I can't get enough of his grin and contagious laughter. He's such a cutie. I can't believe how fast he's growing up. Tyler and I went to the "Stake Day In the Temple." We left Aiden at the nursery and I started bawling. Aiden was quite happy and didn't even seem to notice he was being left, but my heart couldn't take leaving my little baby. It was rather embarrassing. Fortunately Aiden was too young to be embarrassed by me. I don't know what I'm going to do when he goes off to school. Fortunately I do have a few more years before that happens!
